Some residents of Enugu on Saturday listed their expectations from government at all levels in the country, hoping for a new and better Nigeria in 2015.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu, the residents said that political office holders should give their best to restore the dignity of the nation

Mr Osita Uchendu, a civil servant, said his expectation in 2015 was that the government should look into the salary package of civil servants, saying that the economic situation was affecting all workers.

“I am aware that the oil price is going down every day, notwithstanding the government should try and pay us what is commensurable to our job.

“This is because the austerity measures have begun to affect all of us seriously,’’ he said.

Ifeoma Njoku, a secondary school teacher, called on the Federal Government to intensify its fight against terrorism to restore peace and security in the North East and some part of North West.

Mr Edward Nnaji, a pastor, also said that the governments should focus their attention on how to restore peace and stop the killing of innocent souls in Nigeria.

A youth corps member, Miss Amara Orabueze, said she expected a better and more peaceful Nigeria adding that the insurgency in some parts of the North East had made everyone to live in fear.

Mr Dan Ifeanyi, an undergraduate student of Covenant University, Otta, Ogun State, told NAN that he would expect the government to upgrade all universities to international standard.

“I expect the government to bring the Nigerian universities to appreciable standard and also create job opportunities in the country for the success of the nation,’’ he said.

Dr Ossai Nwoye, a gynaecologist, urged government to pay more attention to health sector at every level so as to be accessible to the masses.

He also called for improvement in the public health sector, noting that “many Nigerians do not have the resources to pay for expensive health facilities at private hospitals.’’

A welder, Mr Levi Ohaeri, expressed sadness over the poor power situation in the country adding that businesses of all kinds had crumbled due to outage.

“What I expect from the government is the full restoration of our electricity supply because without electricity many businesses will go down.

“One of the causes of poverty is lack of electricity; virtually everyone uses electricity for either domestic work or for business,’’ he said.

Mrs Onyinye Alokam, said that government should strengthen the nation’s economy by diversifying the sources of the country’s revenue.

“I think government should wake up from too much talking as regards diversification of the nation’s economy and begin implementing it immediately,’’ she said.

Mr Paul Eze, a driver, called on government to provide Nigeria masses with clean and adequate water.

He said that many countries in the world that were not as rich as Nigeria had adequate supply of clean water for their citizens. (NAN)
